BlackBerry’s move to make BBM a cross-platform messenger was all about making money. Until now there hasn’t been any revenue models deployed publicly but they are prepared & will go live soon. According to the latest BBM beta release, we will see Channel ads flowing in within the messenger. It may sound a bit off at first but the presentation will be done smartly without causing you any trouble as mentioned below.

There will apparently be two types of ads on multi-platform BBM:

  • As sponsored invites in the invites section of BBM
  • As sponsored Channel posts in the Updates section of BBM

Unlike annoying banner ads, these are more like invites to you from an unknown person. This feature will definitely help users discovering new BBM Channels & keep them more engaged to BBM than ever before. BBM ads are said to be limited with appearing not more than 3 times per day.

Apart from ads, BlackBerry is also planning to sale custom PINs for BBM & BBM Channels. According to this plan, users will be able to personalize their unique 8-digit PIN as per their choice (e.g. 12345678, NBABULLS, APPLESUX) on an annual or one time fee bases. This model has not been confirmed yet but we hope it happens soon.
