The year 2017 was rough for BlackBerry and Nokia. Both companies filed lawsuits against each other. It all started when Nokia cased a payment dispute of $370 million, but BlackBerry counter filed a lawsuit against Nokia for 11 unauthorized use of patents in return. According to BlackBerry, these wireless patents are also used by several leading carriers in the U.S. for their LTE technology but “Nokia has persisted in encouraging the use” of the standard- compliant products without a license from BlackBerry.
Today, BlackBerry wins a round in Nokia’s patent dispute.
- BlackBerry (NYSE:BB) patents on an industrywide technology standard won’t face a challenge from Nokia (NYSE:NOK) in their dispute, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board has ruled.
- Bloomberg notes the PTAB says Nokia hasn’t shown reasonable likelihood that it could prevail in an inter partes review of BlackBerry’s patents 9,426,697 and 8,861,433.
- Those patents are tied to a federal case where BlackBerry is seeking royalties on Nokia’s mobile networking products.
