Resurrection: BlackBerry! A new 5G flagship smartphone coming next year

OnwardMobility, a newly formed company in the U.S. partners with BlackBerry and promises to launch a ‘Global Flagship’ BlackBerry 5G smartphone in early 2021.

“We really see a need for a 5G BlackBerry, Android smartphone with a physical keyboard and being a flagship device,”

– Peter Franklin, CEO of OnwardMobility.

Yes! This new phone will have the signature BlackBerry keyboard running secured version of Google’s Android OS. “BlackBerry is thrilled OnwardMobility will deliver a BlackBerry 5G smartphone device with physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand. We are excited that customers will experience the enterprise and government level security and mobile productivity the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will offer,” said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO at BlackBerry.

Peter Franklin did not disclose much about the device but hinted to offer a “Global flagship”, sporting a “top-end” camera with both sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave 5G, “across carriers and across carrier bands.” The team rallied around the idea of the most secure phone, and presented a vision to BlackBerry to mark up this deal. “Our goal really is to enable security as seamlessly as possible,” Franklin said. “Some of these features and functionalities have not been available to consumers in the past. You don’t need a huge IT department to benefit from our features.”

The new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will launch in the U.S., Canada and Europe in first quarter of 2021. Let’s hope for it to launch in India as well soon after. Stay tuned for more!
